Prior to the Piggly Wiggly store, his grandfather, Leon Ward Sylvester Sr., along with his four brothers, who were all farmers, opened Richlands Supply Store. “It’s like a tradition to work at the Pig when you are going through high school,” she said.įor Ward Sylvester, the Piggly Wiggly is part of the family in more ways than one. She was there as a customer but the Richlands native also worked at the Pig as a teen.

Store manager Nathan Owens, who has worked for Piggly Wiggly stores for a number of years and moved to the Richlands store in February 2016, said many of their employees have been working at the Richlands store for 20 or more years. The love of the store’s family atmosphere is a common theme. “I love the customers and there is a great atmosphere here,” said head cashier Teresa Powell, who has worked at the store 22 years.
